Head of Engineering
About Sunbound
Company. Sunbound is building the “financial OS for senior care”. The current senior care payments experience is broken which increases costs and inefficiencies for senior living operators while making it confusing, cumbersome and stressful for families. Sunbound was created to solve this problem by building the first modern platform to handle this process end-to-end and save operators and families time, money and effort.
Mission. Our founders were inspired to start the business after seeing the pain points firsthand with their own families, and deeply care about helping one of the most overlooked groups in our population: seniors. Sunbound’s mission is to make managing money for senior living easy, so our customers can focus on what really matters: providing quality housing & care.
Team. We're a small, tight-knit team. Stu leads our eng team and we’re focusing on growing hubs in NYC (downtown Brooklyn) + Washington DC
Traction. Since launching in mid-2023, we now serve thousands of families. We’re currently doing 7 figures in ARR.
Growth. Sunbound has absolutely caught fire as a business, growing 30% month-over-month. The senior living market is massive at >$230b and is expected to grow rapidly as the “baby boomer” generation continues to age.
Funding. We've raised now three rounds of funding from top-tier investors including Fika Ventures, Bling Capital, Liquid2 Ventures, LiveOak Bank, Cambrian Ventures and Max Ventures. These firms have collectively backed over 20 unicorns such as Square, Lyft and Rippling.
Tech stack. React, Express, Node, TypeScript, Tailwind, AWS (e.g. CDK, DynamoDB).
About the role
We're looking to hire a Head of Engineering to join our tight-knit engineering team, and help shape the way we grow from here! We are still small and have lots to do, so an appetite for and ability to contribute directly to building is critical. Leadership and management will become more important over time. Ideal candidates will have ideas about how to structure the work we do and the way we do it so that our team can continue to be greater than the sum of its parts.
Responsibilities
Be the expert. You are not expected to know everything, but you are expected to know how to know everything. Whether you’re uncovering the answer yourself, or directing someone else on the best strategies for researching, you will ultimately be the go-to person for understanding how our technologies work
Contribute code and drive outcomes. Especially at first, you will be a “player coach,” leading by example. Good candidates for this role are excited about solving problems and bringing their ideas to life, in addition to working with other team members to multiply their impact.
Guide architecture, design, and tooling. Help us find the sweet spot of standardization that streamlines development without stifling innovation. Drive design discussion that enable fast delivery of business value without sacrificing technical quality or development sanity.
Grow the team. This means add headcount, and it also means develop existing employes. Identify gaps in our existing talent pool, and help define, screen for, and hire the roles the we need to fill them. Coach existing employees and match them with projects that complement their existing skills / desired areas of improvement.
Help shape engineering team workflow. Our team and business are growing! We need to refine the way we define, track, and prioritize projects. We need to refine the way we collaborate cross-functionally. We need to refine the way multiple developers can work on overlapping projects without getting in each others way
Know when to buy rather than build. Our tightest resource constraints are time and hands to build with! Ideal candidates for this role will be canny about what we do and don’t need to develop on our own
What we expect from you:
12+ years of experience in software development. With a mixture of leadership and IC experience
Recent IC experience. The team is still small and at first you will have time to contribute as a developer.
Experience with a relevant Sunbound domain. You should have hands on experience working in payments, claims, or lending
Proficiency across our tech stack: React, Node, TypeScript, and AWS. (React experience is less important than Node.)
Ability to synthesize and refine the ideas of others. At Sunbound, we value input from across our team—but we also need to be able to make decisions and move forward.
Ability to operate across many levels of detail. You should be comfortable understanding the big picture of our businesses needs, and why we build what we build, while also having a command of how our systems work and what “right” and “done” look like.
Ability to work in-person (hybrid, 2-3 days per week, preferably midweek) in NY or DC.
Why join us:
Low-ego, tight-knit, collaborative, high-performing team
Product-led culture with continuous improvement, blameless post-mortems and intellectual honesty
A committed group of individuals laser-focused on our mission → making managing money for senior living easy, so our customers can focus on what really matters
A group full of ambition - we know we can, and will, achieve great things
Timing! Sunbound is at an inflection point. Every month, we reach new levels of scale. We’ve proven we can execute on the basics; now we need to repeat and build on that success. This provides stability, while still being early enough that there are lots of opportunities for full ownership of new projects, and we can also give meaningful equity in the business’s success.
